You are on : Home / Why a lawyer ? / Specialities and fields of competence
The law is an extremely wide-ranging subject, and it can cover fields as different as business taxation or defence of a private individual before a criminal court.
In the light of this fact, lawyers can be specialized to varying degrees. There are three levels of specialization: general lawyers, lawyers with a specific main activity, and specialized lawyers.
Many lawyers carry out general activities and are able to cover all legal fields.
Other lawyers, because of their professional training or their daily practices, only cover specific fields of law. This enables them to better grasp the complexity and technical aspects of certain legal activities. In this case, they are known as lawyers with a main activity.
Some lawyers with a main activity decide to obtain official recognition of their status as specialists and take a specific examination. It is only after they have passed that examination that they can officially declare that they are “specialists” in a given field of law.
To further define the degree of specialization, each major field of law is subdivided into several fields of competence.
